Crystal Palace crashed to the Reds at home in a keenly contested game in the Premier League.

The highly entertaining affair saw five goals enter the nets in just the first half. Defensive concerns and the strong attacking prowess of both sides made the game one to watch. A new record was set as five goals were scored before the break – making it the most in a first half this term in the Premier League.

Emre Can got the first goal in the 16th minute, but James McArthur quickly got the equalizer for the hosts. Dejan Lovren put Liverpool ahead in the 21st minute and McArthur got another equalizer in the 33rd minute, setting the mood early for an interesting clash. McArthur became the second Crystal Palace player to score two headers in the same Premier League game. Liverpool showed their superiority when Joel Matip got the third just before the recess.

After the break, Roberto Firmino scored the fourth to put the game beyond Palace. The victory ensured Liverpool secured their fifth in six league games. They share the same points with log leaders Manchester City and Arsenal. The only difference being the goals difference. Liverpool’s attack has been impressive – with Philippe Coutinho playing a key role – but the team has still not gotten their affairs at the back in order yet. Lovren allowed McArthur get two goals twice in a space of minutes.

English League side, Crystal Palace could cut a deal for Barcelona midfielder, Alex Song as they plan to boost their squad ahead of next season, after the almost successful attempt to stay afloat this season.

According to reports, Palace will make a bid for the player who is currently in his second season on loan at The Hammers. Song seems not to be top priority for Steven Bilic at West Ham. West Ham signed a clause with Barcelona that gives them the right to sign the 28-year old talent on a permanent deal but they have decide not to thread the path of Song.

With the development, Alan Pardew, Crystal Palace’s boss, is considering making a move for the player. Barcelona paid 15 million pounds to sign Song from Arsenal in 2012 but with his promise he has failed to deliver consistently. He has never been a first team regular at the Catalan giant.

Crystal Palace currently in 16th position have garnered 39 points from 35 matches played this season in the Premier League. The recent loss to Manchester United tainted their record as they had kept clean sheets in the last five games. They lost last to top-placed team, Leicester City last month. They had gone on to play a 2-2 draw in the tough game against West Ham United.  After West Ham, they had the victory in the home match against Norwich City with a lone goal. Crystal palace kept with the clean sheets as they played a goal less draw against The Toffees then another draw against Arsenal in an away match. (more…)

Divock Origi wont be back, says Rodgers

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has ruled out the possibility of recalling Divock Origi from his loan spell at Lille during January. The Belgian international was signed by Liverpool for £ 10 million in the summer, but he was immediately loaned out back to the French club as part of the deal.

Liverpool signed Mario Balotelli as the permanent replacement for £ 16 million, but the Italian has been a huge disappointment as he is yet to score in the Premier League in nine appearances. Rodgers was placing his cards on an early return for Daniel Sturridge, who has not played for the club since September due to injuries.

The 25-year-old has suffered setbacks in his return from injury and he is not expected to return until the early 2015. This major blow is compounded by the fact that none of the Liverpool strikers appear to be capable of ending the goal drought anytime soon.

As a result, the talk of Origi being recalled earlier than schedule has been mentioned. This would cost Liverpool a certain sum of money, but it would be negligible compared to make a new permanent signing. Rodgers, though, says that the plan is to keepOrigi at Lille for the rest of the season in order to aid his development.

“We signed [Origi] last summer on agreement he had to stay at Lille. That was one of main reasons we were able to sign him. As far as I’m concerned, that’s still case with Origi,” said Rodgers speaking ahead of the away match against Crystal Palace. “Liverpool Football Club today confirmed scans have revealed Daniel Sturridge has sustained a new thigh injury. The player will remain unavailable for selection but will be monitored and assessed during his recovery,” read a statement from Liverpool after monitoring Sturridge over the last few days.

Wilfried Zaha has been the subject of a number of transfer rumours in the January transfer window. He has been linked with the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United, but Crystal Palace are quick to acknowledge that the youngster should be concentrating on his current club at the moment.

They have warned him that he should not get carried away with the current interest he has been getting in the transfer window and that only the current performances will matter in football. Crystal Palace captain Patrick McCarthy has said that Wilfried Zaha is definitely a special talent, but he needs to have a grip on himself amidst all the transfer rumours.

Liverpool have been signing a number of British young talent these days and Wilfried Zaha is the latest player to be associated with the club. It is thought that manager Kenny Dalglish would want to make Wilfried Zaha one of his important signings in the January transfer window. “Wilfried is a special talent, probably the most naturally gifted individual I have come across in my career, and this is the perfect club for him at the moment. Every week, you see the improvement in these kids because they are being managed the right way. It would be criminal for these lads to move on too soon in their careers,” he told reporters.

In order to warn Wilfried Zaha, Paddy McCarthy gave the example of John Bostock – a former Crystal Palace player, who has gone down the hill after being initially touted by a number of big clubs. John Bostock was regarded as one of the greatest potential at the age of 16, but he is yet to turn out in the same way many scouts predicted. McCarthy is hoping that Zaha does not turn out to be another case of a failure.
